Multi-Site Aerospace and Defence Security Risk Assessment

Client Case Study

A national aerospace and defence manufacturer required a coordinated security risk assessment across multiple facilities to support regulatory and contractual obligations.

The engagement examined physical security, operational practices, security governance and site-specific risk. Conducted across 2025 and 2026, the work identified differences in security maturity between facilities and provided prioritized recommendations to support a more consistent organizational approach.

The Challenge

A national aerospace and defence manufacturer required comprehensive physical security risk assessments across multiple operational facilities. The organization supported sensitive military and private-sector contracts, with ongoing security assessments forming part of its regulatory and contractual obligations.

While the facilities operated within the same corporate structure, their security environments differed considerably. Each location had its own operational requirements, physical characteristics, critical assets, existing safeguards and exposure to external threats.

An additional challenge emerged from differences in security governance and organizational awareness. Some facilities maintained more developed security measures than others. Site personnel also demonstrated varying levels of knowledge regarding existing corporate security policies, procedures and requirements.

These differences created uncertainty about whether facilities were operating from a common security baseline and whether established corporate requirements were being consistently understood and applied.

The engagement needed to address two objectives simultaneously: evaluate each facility against its specific operating environment and security risks, while supporting a more consistent approach to security management across the organization.

Our Approach

The engagement involved comprehensive physical security risk assessments conducted across multiple facilities during 2025 and 2026. Each location was examined individually, recognizing that differences in operational activities, facility design, critical assets and surrounding threat conditions required site-specific analysis.

The assessment process included daytime and nighttime site observations, physical inspections, structured interviews with operational and security personnel, and reviews of available policies, procedures and existing security measures.

Reviews addressed perimeter protection, building security, access management, electronic security systems, security personnel, incident response arrangements, asset protection and supporting administrative practices.

The assessments also considered applicable regulatory and contractual security requirements associated with aerospace and defence manufacturing. These included relevant Controlled Goods Program requirements, government contract security obligations, export-control considerations and recognized security management practices.

Findings were evaluated against existing safeguards, operational requirements and identified threats. This supported recommendations tailored to the circumstances of each facility rather than applying identical corrective measures across different environments.

The engagement also provided opportunities to examine differences in security governance, procedural awareness and the interpretation of corporate requirements between locations.

In 2026, a follow-up assessment at one facility reviewed progress against previous recommendations, evaluated changes to existing safeguards and identified remaining priorities.

Final deliverables

Individual physical security risk assessment reports documented each facility's operating environment, existing security measures, identified vulnerabilities and prioritized recommendations. The work provided a documented basis for security improvements and investment decisions, supported by a subsequent reassessment that evaluated progress at one location.

The Outcome

The organization received a more comprehensive understanding of its physical security risk profile across multiple facilities, including where existing measures were effective and where additional attention was warranted.

The assessments brought greater visibility to differences in security maturity, the application of corporate policies and the level of awareness surrounding existing security requirements. This information helped clarify opportunities to strengthen consistency while maintaining appropriate safeguards for each facility’s operational needs.

Recommendations provided a basis for prioritizing corrective actions, strengthening security governance and supporting ongoing regulatory and contractual obligations.

Many recommendations have since been implemented, while others remain under consideration or are progressing through established budgetary cycles.

The 2026 reassessment at one facility documented improvements in several areas of physical security and operational practice, while identifying residual issues requiring further attention. This provided an opportunity to evaluate changes over time and refine subsequent priorities.

The engagement established a more informed basis for security decision-making across the organization, connecting site-specific assessments with the broader need for consistent security expectations and accountability.

Key insight

A common corporate security framework does not necessarily result in consistent security practices across multiple facilities. Differences in local resources, operational requirements, security maturity and awareness of existing policies can produce significantly different levels of protection. Effective multi-site security risk management requires both a shared organizational baseline and a clear understanding of the risks unique to each location.
