Security for Security?

Mistake number one about video surveillance systems…it doesn’t replace any of your current security efforts; locks, keys, alarm system.  It’s what I like to call an enhancer.

Even though this may be part of your security arsenal, you have to protect it also.  Anyone who has ever designed or installed video surveillance systems and equipment should have told you that there is nothing that’s 100% vandal proof.  Vandal resistant…Yes.  Vandal proof…No.  Place cameras in areas and positions that would make it difficult to attach, protect the conduit to and from the camera, and access points on polls or light standards should be not so easily accessible.

A recipe for disabling a camera made simple

  • 1 can of spray paint, choose your colour and size of can.  (For those hard to reach cameras, a paint ball gun.  Nothing special, an average paint ball gun will do)
  • Spray and/or shoot the paint over then lens.

Ta Da…your done.  This recipe lasts for a long time and can be enjoyed by violators  for months even years if not attended to by the owner.

The key is to make it difficult to do.  Don’t make it easy for someone to possible deactivate part of your security system.  Make all the parts work together.  Have cameras programmed to react to out of the ordinary changes in the scenery, strategically place sensors to detect and activate other parts of the system, detecting the unauthorized individuals early in their efforts.

Even your security sometimes needs security.  Nothing wrong with that.
