Theft Will be Prosecuted. How serious are you?

This sign is placed at the entrance door leading into a major retailer.

My first thought is that they’re experiencing a spike in theft or are just tired of the continued problem and are trying to send a message out.

Really, with a sign that was made on a printer in the back room, with a page protector that has been obviously cut in half and taped together to seal in the sign.  On top of that we secure it to the glass with a suction cup hook.  That just screams permanence.

Here is my concern.  They might be experiencing a rise in shoplifting or have continuing concerns and truly need to get the message out.  The way this sign has been done, in its quality, the placement and the materials used tells me…”we have a problem, I’m ticked, I don’t have time for this, and when this problem seems to go away I can take down my sign.  When I need to I can print another one maybe with red ink this time.”

So is that how you should be addressing this?  Not really.  Shoplifting in the retail business hits hard.  Many items don’t carry big net profit margins and the minute a staff member needs to address the concern with a ‘patron’ there goes any form of profit that would have been made on that item and probably the next dozen being scanned through the checkout at the same time.

Have a properly made sign and place it with some permanence.  If you have availability of legal advise, seek it.  You want to make sure that the message you put out is not legally wrong or mistakenly offend.  The next big hurdle is then to actually follow what you said on the sign.  Utilize your loss prevention department (if your organization has one) or seek out professional assistance in this area to come up with the necessary strategies to address this problem.  Training of all staff in the signs symptoms and remedies of shoplifting is a great tool to have and use.  The more people you have concerned, diligent and acting as owners the risk of losses will diminish.
