To save the innocent I will describe this environment as the following; slightly upscale retail establishment valued in the millions of millions with an obvious on hand inventory of $200K plus. (I apologize for the quality of the photograph…dimly lit area – plus I walked around the counter and behind the cash register without being challenged to take the photo).
So what are we watching with this camera, rather what are they watching? Are they worried that their burglar is going to come scaling through the roof, slide over a ceiling tile and slowly lower themselves to the show room floor? I don’t think so. If it was easy for me to get behind the cash register during regular business hours without being noticed or challenged to take this photo one doesn’t have to worry about roof top robbers. There are bigger concerns.
If you’re not paying attention to your security efforts I can assure you someone else might just be and with greater detail than you.
Being mindful of the state your security efforts are in, whether that’s policy, physical equipment condition, placement, etc. only takes minutes a day and sometimes doesn’t even require that much effort.
I know, some may be saying “but Michael it was getting fixed, they were re-angling it, they were…blah blah blah”. If it was getting fixed then have your provider, contractor whomever fix it…don’t allow them even if it’s still broken to sit in that position. Oh I forgot to mention I went back to the same establishment just under a week later and took this picture.
Same camera, same position. If i was on the other side of the line, I would now start seriously evaluating the other elements of the protection program and find what other items they’re not watching.
